Related to the amounts of the summer postings from 2016, it must have been some kind of “Endless Summer”, but hey – still one more to go…
Actually already in the middle of autumn, we decided to do a spontaneous 4-days-trip to North Italy to the Lago Di Como, to Varenna and the Villa Monastero.
The weather forecast was promising and it looked more like late summer rather than autumn.
Said and done – Airbnb, Rental car – and hit the road!
At the end of October, the main season is already gone, so that’s why the accommodation was truly quite cheap.
We decided to rent a place in Varenna, directly on the half way of the Lake Como.
Things to know about the Lake Como
The Lake Como or Lago Di Como, how it is called melodically in Italian reminds from its shape to a three-forked star or a Y bottom up.
Due to his very huge extensions the lake has a shore length in total of around 105 miles!
Total area related it is the third largest Italian lake, just after Lake Garda and Lago Maggiore.
An own post about the second one you find here.
What makes the Lake Como so charming, is this natural beauty combined of Lake and mountain region in a fantastic panorama landscape.
Many charming and picturesque little villages like Lecco, Varenna, Como, Blevio, Nesso and many more all around the lake make this place even more attractive.
That is also something that Superstars like George Clooney, Madonna or Brad Pitt found out and are owning domiciles here.
South Switzerland and North Italy
On our way to North Italy, especially in South Switzerland the first landscape eyecandies are waiting…
The alpine world, especially beginning with natural preserve Brevin and then continuing all the way to the Italian border is one big beautiful movie.
The golden Autumn presents itself here in all its blazing brightness.
After passing the border high up in the mountains you will discover the adorable little Montespluga. Such a beautiful little village, located in a high up mountain valley at a deep blue lake. What a welcome from Italy to its visitors!
After a short stop we continued our trip on the Strada Statale 36 into the 50 miles distance located Varenna. With some short stops here and there at some typical beautiful Italian locations… Bella Italia!
Varenna at Lake Como
After arriving in the late afternoon we first wanted to discover this picturesque little village.
Varenna has around 800 citizens, owns a small little fishing port and a ferry to Bellagio, which is located in sight distance.
Going there by car it would take you around one hour to go around the long extension south east, with the ferry you reach Bellagio within a couple of minutes.
The landscape is breathtaking, this mix of calm lake, steep mountains up high, beautiful flora and additional to this a sunset from a picture postcard – this is Italian life quality!
For today we had already so many impressions… with bliss we enjoyed a nice, balmy Late summer evening, end of October in Varenna.
This impressive villa, which was started to built already in the 12th century, is today museum, botanical garden and conference center.
Additional it was the destination for our today trip.
The clear main attraction of this location is the botanic garden.
This place , made so smart and with its typical Italian lightness is just breathtaking.
And if you then additionally have in mind that it was already not main season anymore and many of the blossoms are already withered it was even more impressive to see this magnificence.
Since 2013 more than 1,000 different species from all over the world have been planted here.
Palms, lemon trees, pomelo trees and countless other beauties like English roses and some special oak trees are giving here a beautiful atmosphere.
Decent placed statues and other small installations are completing the overall impression and introduce you to a time long time gone, full of easiness and delight.
The museum itself is located in the Villa Monastero and allows you to see some of the rooms as well as some exhibits like optical and electrical instruments of different kind.
Varenna and Villa Monastero are a true highlight and even with such competition like Bellagio, Lecco and other locations around the Lake Como it shines out.
On your North Italy trip and especially on your Lake Como trip Varenna cannot be missed. The ferry connection to Bellagio makes it even more attractive.
That’s why we say: Go there, behold, be amazed!
In our second part we will tell you about the impressions from our trip around the Lake Como as well as from the cities Como and Bellagio.
