Greetings, dear Travelpeeps!
Let us start freshly where we ended last time – Second day of our Los Angeles vacation – This day was meant to be spent in the Universal Studios Hollywood.
Back at home in Germany we were considering , which day-trip would be the best to do, Disneyland is also just around the corner.
But in the end the decision was made for Universal Studios Los Angeles, not only because of the very good online recommendations, but as well the idea to visit Universal Studios Hollywood attracted us a lot.
We booked the tickets in Germany couple of months before on Viator, so we saved some bucks already beforehand and later at the entrance everything would be much faster.
Said and done – from our stay in Hollywood the way to the Universal Studios Hollywood was pretty short and took us just around 15 minutes and 12$ with an Uber car – super comfortable, super fast and super cheap!
What you should keep in mind while visiting such amusement park, that you are definitely not the only one having such a great idea.
Short: A lot of people. It’s not that bad as you might think.
On the contrary – because the whole entrance area is very spacious and very straight leading, it wasn’t really a problem with waiting. With our digital tickets, not at all.
We arrived at 10 AM and suddenly we stood there in the Universal Studios Hollywood, legendary soundtrack music, crazy figures, Hollywood costumes, old movie cadillacs, cotton candy – let’s say – you are in!
In fact so unobtrusive, that it’s even too good to be true. I was expecting that the first clowns come up and try to make a selfie whit you that you can then buy for 20 dollars or some other of these annoying promotional actions that you usually know too well from other amusement parks. But nothing like this at all!
Completely relaxed we could start now our discover-tour.
Best is of course, if you already start at home to think about what you would like to see, because there is by far enough to see.
But optional you can also let yourself go and led through the park by signs. Or you checkout the map from Universal Studios Hollywood here:
Really a good thing here, that themes and topics are changing with times, movies and seasons.
The huge area is split into two main areas, the upper and the lower lot.
The Universal Studios Hollywood World
Let me give you quickly an overview of the main attractions in Universal Studios Hollywood, that you find there (at the moment):
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™
All about the Harry Potter world incl. a visit of Hogwarts. Unbelievable realistic 3-D adventure, nothing for scaredy cats!
- The Walking Dead Attraction
Zombie fans out there – this one’s for you! When we were there, they were just finalizing the sceneries.
- Studio Tour
Definitely a Must! While sitting in some buggys you cross the whole area and you will see so many scenes from blockbusters and learn so much background knowledge. Just great!
- Fast & Furious – Supercharged
We made the small 3D ride – extremely real, , just breathtaking!
- King Kong 360 3-D
That was THE highlight! Everything went very fast, but you are truly WITHIN the battle between T Rex and King Kong. Bloodfreezing and scary as sh**!
- Nighttime Studio Tour
As the name says – Nighttime Tour. Obviously very interesting but we were there as day visitors ?
- Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
Incl. 3-D Tour, complete replica of the original amusement park incl. Unicorn trophy shooting.
- Super Silly Fun Land
This is the amusement park of “Despicable Me” – colorful, lightand super funny
- Transformers™: The Ride-3D
Also here 3D, due to lack of time we had to skip
- The Simpsons Ride™
If you visit Springfiels, don’t forget to try out the legendary Krusty Burger!
- Jurassic Park® — The Ride
Not 3D this time, but therefor Dinosaurs, that are getting veeery close to you during the wildwater ride, great!
- Revenge of the Mummy℠ – The Ride
For all the mummy and egypt fans of you a Must see!
Didn’t make it this time, but should be one of the highlights of the park as we heard.
- Shrek 4-D™
Phantastic 4D-Effects. Our entry to the Universal World – jsut great, a huge fun!
- Special Effects Show
For all who want to have a look behind the scenes…
- Universal’s Animal Actors
Here the animals are the stars and proof their skills!
We started as already mentioned with the 15 minutes 4D short movie about Shrek and his friends.
4D because you don’t only see in 3D, also your seat is rumbling, water and air is blown into your face and you have a total panoramic view instead of classic 4:3 or 16:9 format.
Unbelievable, how intense these additional effects make such a movie that real! Highly recommended.
In direct neighbourhood you find the incredibly huge Harry Potter premise, including the Hogwarts Express and a visit in the Diagon alley.
Universal Studios was replicating with a very detailed eye the Potter World.
You can even stroll the small alleys, enter all the magical stores and buy the items from the movies like the magic wands, sweets, clothes and much more.
Really great and impressive, how detailed everything is, no matter where you look, everything is moving, making sound or whatever.
After a 30 minutes guide through Hogwarts, which is great per se you will finally come to the by far best experience at all: A virtual 4D flight over the castle, the Quidditch field, lake and so on – Ladies and Gentlemen – this is just stunning!
While you are sitting there in your moving gondola-hanging in the air you truly are flying there together with Harry and it feels just real.
Do it, it is an experience you will not forget for the rest of your life.
Time is running just too fast on such an exciting day and it was already lunch time – off to Springfield to visit the Simpsons.
Also here the whole town felt so real, I immediately felt like a kid again back in those times when I watched the first Simpsons Episodes on TV.
Nostalgic – but also hunger that’s why it was highest time for a Krusty Burger! Try it, it’s really good.
Then – full and happy we went on the biggest outdoor escalator in the world into the lower lot of Universal Studios Hollywood, where you should do at first the Tour over the Backlot of the area to get amazing inside views of movie making and you find out so many things about the legend Universal movies.
Jimmy Fallon is guiding you on screens 60 minutes through this fantastic world.
On this trip you also experience the brand new “Fast & Furious” Tour as well as the King Kong trip, both ultra realistic 4D experiences – Chapeaux Universal!
You also stop by at the scenery of Alfred Hitchcocks “Psycho” and you are observing how he is just shipping her mother into the trunk and the moment he realises that he is being watched he starts to run towards you with his long blade in the hand – scary, leave immediately!
Another great visit was the stay in Jurassic Park.
Sitting on a boat, it doesn’t take long and you immediately enter the scenery, where the scientists were stranded and the first dinosaurs appear on the shore to scare you. The big final of course is the confrontation with the T Rex who tries to get the scalp of one or the other – intense!
What an excitement, it was now time to calm down a bit, so we spend the rest of the day with easily strolling through cute little French and Italian villages, even Moulin Rouge was there. After this we made an excursion to the Super Silly Fun Land, the fun park from “Despicable Me”.
Of course also here everything beautiful and so much detailed.
What an amazing day! What we have seen and experienced here in such a short time – truly unbelievable.
At the very end we did some Souvenir Shopping, you find a lot of great things to keep the memories and to share with friends and family.
We were completely weary but also satisfied and happy to experience such a day.
All expectations were exceeded and on top, there were so many surprises – so all in all this was just a perfect day. 10 points for Universal Studios Hollywood, if you stay in L.A. longer than 4 days – definitely plan a day also to visit this place.
Folks, here is a small time lapse video made by me during a bus ride to Venice beach
