This is the end, my only friend, the end…
So what else to say, my dear Travelpeople, this is the final chapter of our Iceland road trip 2015. And today we tell you about all the Things to do on the way to Vik.
7 days of super excitement, nearly no time to rest, seeing too many wonders in such a short time.
Let me say first, although this shouldn’t be a big secret, that we highly recommend you to visit this country.
Travelling itself is not only about exploring new things and getting excited, tanned or drunk.
It can be like this, for sure, but as a colleague of mine, Christian said to the point, it is also to find out about yourself.
And it is true, and not only this, it is also about changing and developing yourself.
Depending on the way how you travel and where, your company and so on, it can be a lot more than just having fun (which is obviously totally fine ;-)).
It enriches you, it teaches you, it makes you smarter, open-minded and many other things that lightens up your life. At least it is for us like this.
Discover the last part of Iceland
But lets go back to topic.
We ended up the last blog post with our experiences at the black beach, somewhere in the middle of Höfn and Vik in the very south of Iceland and directly at the feet of almighty Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður, Suðurland, Iceland.
The route itself was planned to be around 286kms, in time 3 hours and 21 minutes.
A landscape not from this earth
If I say that this route was the most beautiful, it might not be totally true, because all of them were in their very own way amazing.
But this one was special regarding temperature and climate and result of this was the landscape.
Sometimes it even felt a bit like middle-European, green wide fields, blue ocean – lovely and totally opposite than the cold ice stormy weather, you remember the Akureyri-Blog post?
So here it was again something totally new.
New were also the huge glaciers and lagoons that we saw during this part of our Iceland trip.
And some of them were even so unbelievably beautiful that you have to see it to believe it.
Probably you have sometime seen pictures of these crystal clear blue ice chunks, they are located in Jökulsárlón, which is the most famous and biggest glacier lagoon lake in Iceland.
To tell you what we mean, lets fire up the pictures of this mind-blowing landscape.
For sure this was the ultimate highlight of that episode and it is pretty a huge area where you can make photos.
The god of weather was somehow really pissed that day, anyway she decided to color up the sky in a pretty lame medium light gray combined with a disturbing rain, which my camera didn’t like at all.
You don’t need much fantasy to imagine these pictures with a clear blue sky and the reflection of mountains and glaciers in the water. Too bad, but lets not cry about this.
All in all the trip went out like all the others before, stopping the car, get out of the car, making pics, getting into the car, driving for 5 minutes – repeat the procedure…
see here some results of that circle.
The green south of Iceland
Some kilometers before Vik, we had best sunshine and spring weather, we felt so peaceful and calm because of this lovely area, which couldn’t be more beautiful, just like one of the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich.
Again this splendid blue in the sky, some fluffy clouds playing with the wide fields to paint some curious formats and figures and we just enjoyed life.
Carrying with us this calm, chilled mood, we were driving absolutely easy towards Vik, again a very tiny place with just about 300 citizens, but the southernmost point of whole island that we saw on our Iceland road trip.
So about Vik, there is not much to say at this point, so we continued our way for some kilometers further towards our stay – Gardakot Guesthouse, about 10 minutes by car from Vík í Mýrdal, which is the official and correct name of that town, by the way.
Our Guesthouse was as you might expect from the name, grand.
Two floors, everything quite noble and in combination with this southern weather we had for a second the feeling that we are in Bella Italia haha Ok, just for a second.
Eating at Halldorskaffi
So same procedure, a little refreshment at the Guesthouse, taking a breath and after a short while going to explore the surroundings, which means – (an attentively reader might already have an idea) – going to Vik.
So the place itself, cozy, lovely, adorable, whatever you want to find of these nice synonyms, they all fit.
Our attention was focused on a place called Halldorskaffi, which is the biggest and most famous restaurant and actually one of the best of our Iceland road trip.
I ordered a Burger and the Bird some Ice-cream from the Icelandic goats (haha) with Coffee – just to mention our experiences, everything was tasting excellent and the service like in every single other place in Iceland, no matter if Guesthouse, Gas station or Restaurant – kind and with highest hospitality! Iceland, this is just one point out of so damn many, why we love you!
Day starts with amazing breakfast
So the food was great, a little Photo-walk afterwards also nearby the coast to take some pics seemed a good idea for us, so we made it.
I will not bore you now with uninteresting details, it was like you imagine a walk in Vik, after all that you already know from our Blog posts about Vik in special and Iceland in general.
So the day ended for us with a deep sleep and with new strength and with morning-kissing sunshine we got up and had an amazing breakfast prepared by the house lord (Eva) herself.
What to say, I missed to take a picture, but nothing was missed at the table.
She served even self made fresh pacakes, there were eggs from her own chicken, which also woke up by the way and fresh sausage from neighbour farmers.
It was so good, I even ate too much so walking was a bit hard for me quite a while afterwards, Well, greediness isn’t really a fun…
So after a warm farewell and some presents (black lava sand from Vik) finally the moment came for us to say Goodbye to this Island and we were heading towards Keflavik, from where the plane would depart around midnight.
I was planning as part of our Iceland road trip the route that way, so we still would have enough time for stopping here and there and that there should not be any reason for rushing.
Scheduled for something between 3 and five hours would be fine.
Things to do on the way to Vik
And yes, although there was unfortunately no time to visit the so called “Westman” Islands, Vestmannaeyjar, because they were highly recommended, but the time we simply couldn’t afford.
Maybe we will see Iceland again, next time during the winter months with the Northern lights – let’s see…
But anyway, another great highlight was another huge waterfall, the so called Skogarfoss Waterfall.
Impressive as a waterfall can be, mighty. loud and wide.
After seeing this (pre-) final highlight, we continued our route more or less straight to Keflavik, feeling the time of farewell coming closer and closer and a bit of Wanderlust already took place and we already missed this Island so much.
But wait – one more thing was there for us.
If you are a diligent and faithful, which I totally assume you are, you probably missed something – the Blue Lagoon!
Well, to make it short, we deliberately missed out that place, because it seemed too touristic for us.
Well, we had about 20 km still to go to Keflavik, we were very good in time and suddenly the sign appeared: 7km to Blue Lagoon.
What to say, here are the pictures of one of the most popular places on Iceland and to be honest, it wasn’t that bad, really not.
It reminded us a bit to the lake / geothermal spring of Reykjahlíð (find it in our Blog Part 4), which was also in that crystal clear shining color.
The wonders of Iceland, we saw many of them or maybe even not?
However, more was definitely not possible in this quite short time, I am pretty sure, we made the maximum.
And it was more than satisfying, more than we ever dared to expect.
This Country, this Island, all its Citizens, this Landscape, well everything here was giving us so much, that with this Blog we try to give a bit back and if one or two should get interested or even hungry to see the wonders in the north with his own eyes, we reached something.
We told as much as we could with these Blog posts hopefully without not boring too much, a lot more of course is there to talk about this topic.
Feel free to ask, enjoy the Galleries we made or read about Iceland in countless forums, Blogs, it is worth it!
And at least – go there and see with your own eyes.
Here ends our trip, the flight back from Keflavik to Berlin was not that spectacular that it should get more attention here than just to be mentioned, so thats it, folks. Our Iceland road trip ends!
Hopefully you enjoyed and did get in touch a bit deeper together with us on that look back. See you again soon on the road,
Keep on traveling – and always with the Bird!
