On our checklist “Visiting worth seeing events and concerts in Berlin” I discovered some weeks ago this jewel on Eventim.
Remember – last time was the right moment for Opera, this time let’s kick a bit harder – Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly present this Black Metal band: Satyricon.
One of the few Norwegian Black Metal Bands, that not only became almost legendary, no – they are constantly making finest, atmospheric, and a bit experimental Black Metal since 1990 without line-up changes, breaks or anything else. Straight in the face and always consequent and now it was time for the Satyricon concert.
Satyricon consists of Satyr (Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards, Bass (1991-present)) and Frost (Drums (1993-present)).
These two Scandinavian metalheads are the permanent members, on tour and for recording they take a bunch of guest musicians, like Steinar “Azarak” Gundersen, Neddo, Diogo Bastos and Job Bos.
Let me make a little break at this point and give you a short explanation about the name: Satyr is a demon from ancient Greek mythology with a horse-tail, horse-like ears, and sometimes a horse-like phallus. All right? Wanna know more? Check out here…
Anyway – I was really excited about this gig and as usual, when it comes to new concerts I surprised the Bird with a Spotify-list full of highlights of the Black Metal band, that we we will visit next.
So this list gave her quite a good overview of the musical development of Satyricon over the past 25 years from raw northern Black Metal till the nowadays technical, apocalyptical and a bit Rock’n’Roll-erish grown up Black Metal.
So finally, on Wednesday, 22nd of April 2015 Satyricon came to visit the Capital of Germany, playing in the SO36, a small but fine and culty Club in Kreuzberg.
The Special Guests Vredehammer from Mo i Rana (Nordland), who are also playing Black/Death Metal, made a solid opening, so the pit had the chance to warm up already for the headliner tonite.
But to be honest, at this early stage there was just a handful of Metalheads listen to Vredehammer.
The second band of this evening was Oslo Faenskap, who was playing a mix of Death Metal and Metalcore, which in general is nothing bad, but it didin’t really suit the aura of high expectations of Satyricon with their melancholic, harsh Black Metal from the dark, northern parts of this planet.
What to say – they were fighting and made a real good job, but it remained a spark, just trying to set the halls on fire.
After enjoying the first cold Berliner Pilsner we were prepared for the Show and finally in time at about nine thirty after the classic sound-check and stage-preparation the upcoming light show was introducing the dark guys of Black Metal from the north – hail Satyricon!
Finally the Satyricon concert
And what a kick off! They started with an amazing opener “The Rite of our cross“, which brought everyone in the right mood for hard, loud Metal. The following smashing songs from the end of the nineties and the early two-thousander like “Filthgrinder“, “Our world, it rumbles tonight!” brought even the last one to the right point.
A very clear and pressuring sound, as well as a great light show was celebrated with massive applause from the audience.
I personally prefer the older songs from their earlier albums, “Dark Medieval Times” and “Shadowthrone“. A great pleasure for me – they were also playing some gems from these albums.
Of course, Satyricon developed a lot and their music grew up, so I also was amazed by the live quality of their new hypnotizing, technical Black Metal during the Satyricon concert.
It reminded me a bit of Celtic Frost in quite some parts. Hymns like “K.I.N.G.“, “Now, Diabolical“, “The Pentagram burns“, “The Wolfpack“, “Walk the path of Sorrow” and of course “Mother North“.
Satyr, a true frontman was making a great gig, head-banging and using the whole stage for showing up presence during the whole Satyricon concert. After about 40 minutes he also was playing guitar which gave the whole scenery an additional thrilling atmosphere.
Frost on the drums was hitting his instrument like if there’s no tomorrow. Fast and brutally loud all musicians showed how to play excellent Norwegian Black Metal live. After about an hour Satyricon was presenting live stuff (with samples) from their upcoming Live DVD “Live at the Opera“, where they are performing together with the “Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra” and “National Opera Choir”. What to say, since many years – the combination of extreme Black Metal and classical sounds is nearly unbeatable. No other genres that are trying to reach musical perfection fit so well together and are similar in the way songs / pieces are composed.
Anyway, this session gave to the Satyricon concert an amazingly different, even a bit melancholic atmosphere, where I saw myself suddenly gliding over the endless woods and mountains in the north of Norway.
Opening the gig with great light effects and brutal sound!
Lights, Black Metal and German beer – enough to have an amazing evening!
Satyr himself as well made clear statements and compliments to the Berlin Metalheads – while saying that there is still a great Metal fan-base in the Capital of Hipsters and Electronical Music.
Word! It was honored with a wall of applause and shouts.
All in all the Satyricon’s Black Metal Gig took more than two hours and they fired up an impressive fireworks of energetic and ultra-loud, heavy Norwegian Black Metal Sound.
Yes, it was fuckin’ loud! The next day we still had the bells ringing in our ears for quite a while. But of course it has to be like this on Metal concerts.
When the Satyricon concert unfortunately, but finally came to an end, one guy in the front row raised the Norwegian flag and was waving it around, which was truly appreciated by Satyr with kind words of how honored he felt, that a country that huge like Germany shows such a respect to a small five-million country like Norway. I think in that case it’s not about the size, it’s about reverence and saying thank you for making great, pounding and brilliant Black Metal since about 25 years.
An amazing evening, great show – a fantastic Satyricon concert!
Satyricon, thank you for an amazing evening!
It is always feeling so damn right to see musicians on the stage who are not counting their earnings for the Gig, but playing an ass-kicking show, where everyone can leave home later by having an amazing evening.
This is what he said, Satyricon feels so amazingly free, to go on tour whenever and for whatever they want.
Find here also a pic of Valeria, a friend of the Bird, who had a nice meet & greet with Satyricon after the Show in Berlin. Lucky one!
Finally a nice little video-gem, which i found on the official Satyricon-Channel.
It’s a lyrics-video, which gives you also the possibility to get a bit deeper into the dark-minded, complex world of Satyricon.
Enjoy folks and see you next time on the road or on the Blog telling about how it was on the road 😉
