Springtime. Sun. Warmth. Blossom. Bees. Green. Flowers. Easiness. Ah yeah… and of course snow as far as the eye can see.
April is well known to start some capers. But how it behaved end of April in St Gallen Switzerland – that was indeed something totally surprising.
In general the Winter 2016/17 was here in East Switzerland a very short one.
A bit of snow here – quite cool there, but a true hard winter St Gallen? Wrong!
That’s why we had already in march temperatures close to summer level.
The anyway weak winter seemed to be dead. But then… came the return of the Onset of winter Switzerland.
Permanent Snowfall in St. Gallen
Well yeah… until exactly now.
Completely unexpected the snowfall started on Tuesday 25th of April. Combined with amazing grey sky, heavy wetness.
Exactly this kind of weather, which ruins the mood of even the friendliest one.
But if this would not be already enough, Saint Peter decided to celebrate this job in a loop.
Permanent Snowfall was the result from this.
Interesting was, that that the ground was already so warmed by the spring sun, that the snow melted away completely.
But St. Peter would not be the weather god if he would give up that easily.
It seemed there was a bet and for better or worse huge parts of Switzerland needed to be covered in White…
Ladies & Gentlemen – the winner is: Petrus.
The Onset of winter Switzerland
Yes it snowed heavily and long – on Friday it reached already a height of around 30 cm and more!
The downside of such a massive onset of Winter are of course all the limitations.
Due to the heavy weight of snow everywhere the trees everywhere lost branches, that cracked and were laying around on the streets.
All available forces were busy with unmaking damages and put everything back in place.
But something else complicated the situation:
St. Gallen is in many areas very hilly with steep hill upwards. Let me talk here explicitly about Small San Francisco.
In combination with this weather this meant that many cars blocked complete streets, since they could not go up hills anymore or slid helplessly down the hills. That was truly a return of the Onset of winter Switzerland.
As dramatic as the situation was for City, forces and worried citizen… there is always the other side of the coin.
The Winter sun comes out
And this sun showed up already Friday evening with the end of snowfall and clearing of the sky.
It really seemed, that St. Gallen would come up again with one of its spectacular sunsets.
Camera taken and catch these impressions – that was the dictate of the moment!
After being not that lucky with my first point in the west of St. Gallen near the woods I decided just in time to go towards Dreilindenweg to catch the sunset from south.
This was a march of around 20 minutes and I focused all the time on the sun – would I make it in time?
And yes! I had around 10 minutes left, out of breath but without time pressure to catch these sun rays, which have bee the icing on the cake of this so charming winter-spring-landscape.
The next Winter Saturday morning indeed presented itself in all its glory.
Clear, blue sky! The sun shone with all its power and put the whole city into gleaming snow white as far as the eye could see.
What a sight!
There was such a peaceful silence above all, this could only mean: Continuing the photo session.
Long story short:
In the south of St. Gallen you will find, as mentioned already in our latest St. Gallen post the so called Drei Weieren with its open air bath. That was my destination.
St. Gallen is located in a valley, surrounded by hills.
This meant for me – hiking tour southwards direction Freudenberg with the highest possible and best round view over St. Gallen and the area around and making photos.
The conditions were perfect, but please see for yourself.
I spent the whole morning to catch these amazing winter impressions.
What truly fascinated me was, that this was not a typical “winter shooting”. No, mother nature was already full in bloom, ready to wear its light and beautiful summer dress.
And then this thick snow layer came upon.
It seemed it was a pure white wedding dress, which this colourful, bursting spring is now trying on.
And exactly these impressions fascinated me, even though my feet were freezing, since I stood knee deep in the snow. But all Snows of yesteryear.
These impressions were worth every afford. And that’s why I share them here with you.
All the impressions from my shooting you will find HERE in the Gallery.
And last but not least you find here a Slow-Mo Timelapse-video from my Saturday-morning-shooting:
