Travelpeeps, how to start talking about Myrtle Beach?
Well, maybe with the very interesting fact, that Myrtle Beach is one of the top touristic destinations in the USA. 14 Million visitors each year!
Reported from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce it has been 17,2 million visitors in 2014 – that’s truly impressive.
Who would have thought?
With a population of just 27,000 people, Myrtle Beach City is truly a popular place and offers many Myrtle Beach attractions.
And by the way it was our next destination on our road trip from New York City to Key West, after leaving the beautiful Outer Banks and Hatteras behind us.
But why is that?
Well, one reason might surely be the 60 miles long Grand Strand in the North East of South Carolina, which truly knows how to impress with amazing sand beaches and on the other hand it might be the perfectly fitting sub tropical climate.
Myrtle Beach summers are long, hot and humid 🙂
Stopover in Washington
Wait, we just have been to Washington?
Yes, exactly, Washington. But because there is more than one Washington in the United States, we are talking here about the small city in North Carolina and not the one in DC, which we already visited before. This Washington, which is also called the Original Washington or Little Washington is with its 10.000 citizen really a beautiful small idyllic place.
Founded in the year 1776 it was the first city with the name of the First American President.
And with its distance of around 160 miles to Hatteras it was for us the ideal place to make a short stop.
And indeed it is a fairytale-ish little US American Small town. Here are some impressions…
Tourism in Myrtle Beach
Then we continued going southwards to Myrtle Beach, which we reached quite late around 10pm.
The main season in Myrtle Beach starts usually in May with an average highest temperature of around 78.8 °F.
Undisputed are the Myrtle Beach attractions in great demand with its 14 million visitors each year!
Mainly U.S.-Americans, since just some few 100 thousands tourists are coming from overseas, mainly Germans and British ones.
Almost redundant to mention that tourism is by far the source of income No. 1 here.
But what might not be only good news for tourists but also locals, is that next to all the Myrtle Beach attractions you will find here amazing shopping possibilities.
Myrtle Beach is well known for countless shopping malls.
Not really that surprising maybe, since these 14 Million visitors surely also want to make the one or another shopping tour.
The history of Myrtle Beach
Before the first European settlers were colonizing this piece of land, the Long Bay Area was owned by Indians as so many other regions in the USA.
Here it has been the Waccamaw tribe.
Later then, at the end of the 18th century the first settlers start with plantation growing.
Indigo and tobacco from superior quality were the result of the growing.
What followed was a massive expansion of railroads and the countless sawmill and railroad company workers have been the first tourist groups after a short time. Simply by storming the beaches during the weekends.
Later, in the year 1937 the city got its own airport, the Myrtle Beach Municipal Airport.
Almost instantly it was repurposed to a military airport base due to the 2nd World War.
Since 1976 there are also commercial flights going from here.
Myrtle Beach attractions
The city itself might be pretty small, but therefor Myrtle Beach has, as mentioned many long and beautiful beaches.
But there are way more sight seeings and attractions and not only seasonal ones!
Already visible from far and belonging to the Myrtle Beach attractions is The Skywheel.
The legendary big wheel, which directly tells every visitor: This is a place of Entertainment!
And in fact next to all the typical beach- and water sports you also find here the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, which was elected officially to one of the best US Boardwalks ever!
The Carolina Opry offers different musicals, dancing shows, concerts and more. You can find further information about which artist, which show is running on which day, what does it cost and so on directly here: thecarolinaopry.com
Golfers also feel home here. And this is even understated since Myrtle Beach is also known as the “Golf-Capital of the World!”
Around 100 Golf places make that possible!
Myrtle Beach fun facts
Sweepstakes on the high seas
Gambling is illegal in South Carolina. But what would be such a tourist place, if there would not be also a solution for this?
Via bookable ships you will be immediately in international waters and regarding this in shallow waters as well.
The Thong Bikini Ban
Who is not knowing (and loving?) it – the thong… well, at least in Myrtle Beach it is forbidden to wear. Everywhere. At all beaches, in the city. Everywhere.
Substantial fines as well as even prison can be the result of wearing this little piece of textile.
Food for everyone
At the Grand beach there are around 1.700 (!) restaurants. This is a lot of food, no one needs to starve here, that’s for sure.
A huge amount of seasonal events are attracting even more visitors, for example in march the so called Can-Am days, Canadian-American celebration days with countless visitors.
In June there is the Sun Fun Festival. Many famous fireworks and additional events are making Myrtle Beach to a true allrounder.
A good overall overview of all the events and To do’s in and around Myrtle Beach you find here.
Myrtle Beach was for us (unfortunately) planned just as an overnight accommodation. We would and should have put one additional day into planning here, but time wise it was simply not possible. And it was also not the main season (which doesn’t have to be a bad thing in general).
But what we have seen is a fantastic beach area with countless entertainment offers.
Our impression was – and the numbers are clear about this – that this is truly an almost U.S.-Only holiday destination.
The average German, English or wherever coming from tourist will probably rather go north to visit Washington or if he prefers beach, then heading south to Miami.
Anyway – we have seen Myrtle Beach and are happy about it, that this was part of our East coast road trip and a central point for exactly this part of our trip.
See you next time with incredible flowerish impressions from Charleston!
So do not be a Turtle, rush and see this Myrtle!
