Buongiorno, Bonjour, Buenos Días and welcome to our next Birdontrack Blog „Holiday on Mein Schiff 2, Episode 1, Mallorca Travel Tips“ – this time we found ourselves floating on the sunny Mediterranean Sea.
We discovered some of the most beautiful places of Southern Spain, Italy, Monaco and France’ Côte d’Azure by cruising for 11 days with the amazing „Mein Schiff 2“ from TUI Cruises.
A huge Cruise ship, as the name says, it’s the second of its kind, the newest one, „Mein Schiff 4“ is just entering now also the seven seas.
Perfection on the Cruise ship
Well, this kind of traveling was for the Bird completely new, compared to our Road-trip to Iceland it was something like the total opposite of course.
For me it was now the 6th, but the third time with TUI Cruises and to be honest, I will probably never travel with a different shipping company at all, because not only, that the ships are brand new and quite luxurious, TUI understands the best how Germans like to travel with that kind of cruise.
This means for example, that you don’t pay any extra money for soft- and alcoholic drinks (which can be quite fast some extra hundreds of Euros if you don’t have a drinking flat), the comfort in general has a high standard, of course it will be spoken German on the ship (yes, there are still people that don’t speak English that good and want to talk German on their holidays as well) and last but not least you feel some kind of perfection in nearly every detail on the ship and crew.
Everything is absolutely perfectly organized but not in a stressful way.
Opposite to this it’s totally harmonized and relaxing.
You immediately get into the feeling, that this is luxury holiday at it’s best. Crew, Captain and the guests are in the best holiday mood.
There is no need for the typical German complaining about some small details that are not worked out with perfection, because everything here is simply perfect.
The quality and quantity of the food, the room service, the kindness, the offers on the ship, the route, whatever I come up with – it is organized perfectly only for the purpose to give you the best possible relaxing and discovering moments.
The tour started on Thursday, the 23rd of July 2015 in the very first morning, leaving from Berlin Schönefeld at 6 AM with Easyjet directly for 2 and a half hours to Palma de Mallorca.
We arrived one day earlier, because we wanted to start as easy as possible into the holiday and having also some extra time to explore Palma.
Mallorca Travel Tips
Our Hotel was the HM Balanguera, quite in the Heart of Palma and a fantastic and extraordinary beautiful Hotel.
After arriving at about 11 AM in this place we still had a lot of time until the Check-In so we decided to leave our luggage there and explore the nearby surroundings.
Of course the rule No. 1 in Southern countries: Drink as much water as possible and even more.
The sun really dries you out and empties your batteries fast so therefor refill any time!
Our way lead us via the „Carrer de Miquel del Sants Oliver“ and „Passeig de Mallorca“ to the Port of Mallorca. I think it’s a good idea to come up here with some impressions…
Visit the Hard Rock Cafe Mallorca
Palma is quite a classical touristic place, of course it has a long tradition for this, even without Ballermann and party, nearly everything here is related to touristic purposes.
Anyway, the town itself makes a clean and quiet impression, friendly and peaceful.
We felt very comfortable there. At the port we had some kind of breakfast and drinks at the local Hard Rock Café (We usually always visit the local Hard Rock Cafes), although they are pretty expensive.
But I really like to discover everytime the local treasures from music legends that leave impressions there.
Here we found for example Guitars from Slayer’s Kerry King, personally hand signed items from the Beatles, The Who and countless other legends of Rock and Metal. In my opinion it’s always worth a visit.
The port of Mallorca itself is full of hundreds of boats and ships like nearly any other bigger port in the South European coastline.
From the small fisher-boat up to the multi million Mega Yacht you find here everything.
Making a little walk-around on the Port Area of Mallorca is quite a nice thing and so the way lead us to the old town of Palma, which is for me usually one of the most interesting place to see when I visit countries and cities.
From the Port to the Old Town
We now had the classic Siesta time during the midday and afternoon hours, when it is so hot, that the stores and shops need to stay closed and the streets are nearly empty instead of some crazy tourists walking around there.
So we took the chance to breathe some pure old town breeze and explored this area.
Mallorca also has a history of a military place so that’s why you also find here many places like forts, huge city walls and other army-related locations.
But fortunately not too disturbing or non fitting these locations are only historically related and it does not spoil the holiday mood and the easiness.
After a quick, refreshing swim in the hotel pool we decided to explore more of the area during the evening hours, at least we wanted to see the most famous and huge Cathedral of Palma.
So we made our way again through other routes of the old town, we discovered so many surprising and beautiful little areas like an upside down house, old Spanish ladies playing passionately Boccia and we saw other Birds, quite big and made of stone, but still birds.
End of Day 1
For shopping of course you also have many possibilities, eating in classic restaurants and bars with amazing seafood as well.
So we easily made our way through so many tiny old town streets like Via Roma, Carrer de Jesus, A. De Alemanya to the Parc de la Mar and the Cathedral of Mallorca quite in the South east of Palma.
The day was nearly over and at around Midnight we ended up pretty tired after a long and exciting day in Palma, which was a perfect introduction of our holiday to come.
The next morning we started with an outstanding good breakfast in our hotel HM Balanguera and we headed with the Taxi directly to the Cruise Port „Dique del Oeste“ at the Port Pi.
We were thinking about to walk that way but to be honest, this is some kind of suicide with full heavy luggage, quite up and down way and with this burning southern Sun.
So we got off the Taxi and directly on-boarded to Mein Schiff 2, where a very kind staff already awaited the incoming travelers and took care of all necessary things in a very polite way.
Get on Board of “Mein Schiff”
After half an hour and some duty free shopping we were finally official guests of the „Mein Schiff 2“, we received our Boarding Passes, which are ID, Credit Card and everything else for you on your trip, so you can put all your other stuff in the safe, because you simply don’t need it.
After exploring this huge and impressive ship first in detail, we decided to enter the Buffet, the so called Ankelmannsplatz, where truly no wish keeps unsatisfied.
Food at it’s best in every possible way. Cheese, Meat, Fruits, Vegetables, Bread, Fish, no matter what – here you find it and you can eat as much as you want.
Without any extra pay. And a very friendly staff that serves you in any thinkable way.
This is some kind of food paradise!
Nothing is missed on “Mein Schiff 2”
On board of such a huge ship for also such a quite long time there nearly stays no wish unfulfilled.
You find here many Restaurants for every kind of taste, Bars, Gym, Spa and Wellness, even a huge theater with amazing shows is waiting.
So our first day on board of „Mein Schiff 2“ ended with lot of eating, sunbathing, exploring and just being happy.
Before we would get off-board the next time on Sunday, the 26nd of July in Ajaccio, Corsica we spend the whole next day, Saturday, the 25th with a Seaday, heading the distance from Palma to Ajaccio, which is about 1129 km.
There was enough time to get tanned on deck, having snacks or drinking one, two, three beers or whatever you prefer. For the bird water with juice of course.
In the evening we decided to visit the Restaurant „Atlantik“ which offers high class Dinner with personalized Staff.
Take a look at the 5-Gänge-Menü. Not more to say, this is pure comfort and after this amazing Dinner we decided to visit the theater for a Show of German Hits from the 60’s till the 80’s.
All the classic Hits from Roland Kaiser, Udo Jürgens, Drafi Deutscher and many more were performed by the Cruise Theater Group, who made really a great and fun Show.
So ended the first episode Mallorca Holidays here and the next morning we arrived in Ajaccio, Corsica.
