Our spring started pretty nicely, I must admit that.
We had a great chance to enjoy these four days in the capital of Spain.
Amazing city with its best location; you can easily travel to the north, east, west or south and everything is close!
City with dozens of parks, suddenly the metropolitan life vanishes and you can dig into peace and enjoy all the beautiful aspects of mother nature.
Let me tell you a bit of our arrival day.
We landed in Madrid on Thursday, 12th of march, sunny morning.
First thing to do: Take your jacket off!
Yes, it is already very warm there.
The bus that costs 5 euros per person takes you to the very city center of Madrid from the airport.
Takes around 30 minutes, not bad.
We got off on the station where the city hall of Madrid was located.
The impressive white building, which was formally a post office, yes yes, our tour guide Daniel, I will tell you more about this guy later on on this post, told about it.
On the top of the building there is a nice area, where tourists can see the whole city.
Also the building includes exhibitions. We did not have so much time to visit those, but exhibition-lovers would appreciate it.
Here, you can see this splendid building, photo taken by Hendrik.
The hotel where we stayed was located in Plaza San Martin, Super central.
The building was so nice and Spanish, we wanted it to be something traditional Spanish.
Inside the Hotel there was all renovated, plus a wonderful inner garden.
Whenever I travel, I always try to imagine how old architectural buildings, streets, parks looked liked hundreds of years ago.
What has changed, what has stayed as it was before. Always so fascinating.
Of course I must tell about food as well. So important to taste local goods!
We were so hungry that day as any day of our lives we are hungry birds, but this day especially.
After having a quick x-ray on each local restaurant in the neighborhood of our Habitation in Madrid, we spotted one little restaurant called Don Juana.
Anyway, cannot remember the name correctly, but simply don’t go there.
Not good. I tell you why.
This typical tourist trick. Firstly, they didn’t speak any English and were not friendly at all, no smile nothing.
This felt like a funeral moment.
We took a menu card and ordered Fried Calamares, orange juice and water plus salad. First the waiter brought the drinks.
TADAA, the orange juice is Fanta, we did not know that. Second, comes the piece of bread and olive oil.
As in normal restaurants the bread is an addition, but when we got the bill, of course we had to pay extra for the bread.
Of course talking does not help, they will always tell you that you ate the bread, you must pay the bread. Simple advice, do not eat anything that you did not order that they put on the table.
That was the first meal, not the best experience, but the best is to come.
No stress folks, I tell ya soon.
OK. Lets keep our topic in foods. Next what we saw was this famous food market, Mercado San Miguel.
Always crowded place, a lot of people, also a lot of locals and tourists all together there.
But the food tastes so delicious and its so fresh. Any kind of tapas for 1 euro.
Bigger portions of seafood cost around 10-12 euros per plate. Also those who loves sweets, it is a heaven of sweets.
The concert visit
Well yes, we were so much looking forward to this.
Arvo Pärt, Estonian composer, who really touched me with his composition Requiem for Benjamin Britten.
The concert was located in Auditorio Nacional.
Truly recommend to listen to his music, if you are into medieval choral music, you would love it.
More about the streets and the city itself, buildings, impressions of the city.
Gran Via is the main Street, it is a shopping street full of different boutiques.
The street is a pearl; great buildings, beautiful architecture.
The outer appearance of the buildings cannot be changed, which means that any kind of renovation can be made only if the original architectural design remains as it was planned from the start.
Main Square is the place where young people come and gather together, also a lot of entertainers that try to impress people with theirs skills and talents.
We saw many entertainers from fat Spidermans till cool statue –like chess players. Ah, almost forgot, also Mickey Mouse was there!
And Simpson, aand.. well, many celebrities, but fat Spiderman was the King.
Then we went to eat to Hard Rock cafe.
Yes, all the time eating, because all the time hungry. Was a nice relaxing moment when we enjoyed our burger and smoothie there.
Suddenly comes from each side some suspicious people. A little boy and I suppose his mother.
They are trying to wave in front of our noses some Menu cards. Opening and closing, again opening and closing.
What is this clown we thought, of course then you realize, thieves.
Yes. They wanted to steal our wallet and phone which was on the table, the little boy was reaching to the phone when the waitresses came and shouted “VAMOS” at least four times.
Then they left. We were sitting in the inner garden of the Cafe, and the woman entered trough the little gate and was sitting by the corner table and checking the situation.
Another advice is, that never put your belongings, especially those that may cost a bit more euros than a price of a lunch, away in your bag or your pocket.
After this little action with the thieves in the Hard Rock Cafe, we continued with our tour bus called RUTA 1.
Beautiful Latvian name had this bus. We loved this idea with the bus, you can hop on the bus and hop off any station you like.
Hop On Hop OFF busses were the best. Comfy seats and you get also headphones and can listen to nice stories about the city.
The last morning we woke up quite early and had a breakfast in an amazing cafeteria called Rodilla. Here, see below a commercial picture where the Bird, me is trying her best to promote the place…
What is Rodilla? First of all, it is a life-style. Once there, always there 😉
Why? Great service, great food, surprising prices and comfy seats.
