Grüezi miteinand’ and welcome to the second part of our “Summer-South-Switzerland-Short trip”, the Lugano attractions.
In the last post we told you about our stay in Ascona and Locarno and this time we talk you with us on our Sunday ride to the contiguous Lugano.
As mentioned already in the first part, the whole (South) Switzerland is an eye-candy and so the anticipation was already pretty high in terms of the 25 miles away Lugano.
After an extensive breakfast we started our trip heading to Lago di Lugano and already the first impressions affirmed our new fascination for Switzerland.
Such dazzling beauty!
The unique beauty of Lugano attractions
The city with its around 64,000 citizen is quite big already for Swiss conditions. Additionally to this its third most important finance place in Switzerland.
This splendid jewel is embedded at the Lake Lugano between three mountains.
It offers the charm of a beautiful small village but as well with some mundane flair.
Parks, Flowers, Fountains, beautiful old buildings & mansions and a truly adorable historical old town make Lugano an incomparable location.
The lakeside promenade, to mention this clearly is one of the most beautiful I have seen at all.
The symbiosis of the mountains, the lake and in between this appealing city is fascinating each and every visitor.
Lugano: Art & Culture
Lugano, as said is an important finance place and therefor quite obviously not on the list of the 100 poorest cities worldwide.
Associated with this a relevant art scene has developed in Lugano.
Regularly international art- & architecture exhibitions are inherent part of the cultural life of Lugano.
For players and gamblers there is even a Casino with an A-licence.
Many historical and beautiful churches around making Lugano not even more beautiful, but a place already even mandatory to visit.
The official hot spots of Lugano and around are
- Parco Civico: stunning southern vegetation. You find also the Villa Ciani here.
- Backyard Mountain Monte Brè (Height 925 meters): beautiful panorama over the lake and the mountains of Tessin
- Backyard Mountain Monte San Salvatore (Height 912 meters): see also Monte Bré. Both mountains can be reached by foot or with train.
- Cathedral San Lorenzo: impressive Renaissance building
- parish church Santa Maria degli Angioli: abbey church built around 1500 AD
- Hesse-Museum in Montagnola
- Church San Rocco
The promenade of Lugano
The Riva Vincenzo Vela promenade invites you to spend a whole morning, yes even a while day there.
Coming from south, the Riva Antonio Caccia there are magnificent buildings, stylish Cafés and everywhere this easy Dolce Vita waiting for you.
Truly pleasant is, that the traditional old town is located directly in the next street over, so by walking you have all the places directly next to each other.
So we spent nearly half the day this way.
As a highlight and finale for our Lugano visit we chose the Parco Civico. Definitely part of the Lugano attractions!
Practically that the lakeside promenade is ending directly in this park so you cannot even miss it.
The park contains additionally to the Villa Ciani countless beautiful southern plants and trees, many of them quite exotic even.
All in all this was a day full of beauty, relaxation and bliss. So in the afternoon we went back home to St. Gallen – full of endless great impressions and photos as well.
The principality Liechtenstein
On our way back from the Lugano attractions we passed directly the tiny principality Liechtenstein.
And because this balmy summer day had anyway some more sun hours left for us, we spontaneously decided to make a short detour for the program “Liechtenstein for Blitz Visitors”.
Liechtenstein, as you might know is truly small. So that’s why we were already immediately in the Capital Vaduz with its striking landmark, the Castle Vaduz. 129 meters high above the city this keep is enthroning impressive and definitely worth a visit.
Pity, that the castle was now during the evening hours already closed. So this time we just made a couple of snapshots from outside, but not less impressive.
The landscape and this special evening light of the sun, which stroked through the summer clouds was creating a truly beautiful atmosphere.
And with these Lugano attractions ends our first summer weekend in Switzerland with a detour to Liechtenstein. With a deep feeling of happiness and satisfaction related to the fascinating beauty of our new home country Switzerland the start could not have been better.
Many more exciting impressions from different regions of Switzerland will follow, but our Lugano trip ends here.
A lot more things for you to be expected, that’s what we can already say 🙂
