Ladies and Gentlemen, today we take you on a day trip to Lake Constance!
For all those who have no idea where Constance is located… at Lake Constance 🙂
More concrete in the (very) south of Germany, directly at the border to Switzerland.
Actually it is more or less directly grown together with the Swiss neighbor city Kreuzlingen.
So the national border goes directly through these two cities.
With its 85,000 citizen Constance is not only the biggest town at Lake Constance.
Due to its long and eventful history, its many museums and last but not least because of its fairytale-like Old Town, Constance is truly a tourist magnet.
Additionally Constance is also a venue for many Swiss people.
Shopping is here way cheaper than in the own country. But this kind of Border-Shopping might be actually pretty common on many borders worldwide, so nothing special here.
The history of Constance
The history of the city starts already 2,000 years ago, when Celtic tribes settled here.
Around 200 years later the Romans under Emperor Augustus conquered this area.
Supposedly around 300 A.D. the city Constantia was founded, but the first official transmission happened around 220 years later.
Again a bit later, around 585 A.D. the bishop Maximus settled over to Constance and the City was now under Alemannic influence.
With the establishment of the diocese Constance the city became highly important as a trading point.
From the year 1,200 A.D. the citizens of Constance carved out more independencies from the Bishop and the rich aristocracy.
Then from the year 1414 to 1418 A.D. the city received worldwide attention due to the “Council of Constance“.
The separation of the holy church ended. Constance was brimful with bishops, cardinals, monks, the pope with all his people and many more.
And exactly this event is now, 600 years later celebrated.
Quickly calculated… you have time until 2018 for all you fellows that are interested in history and culture.
Imperia Constance – half naked Landmark of the city
Already visible from the distance, this 9 meter high and 18 tons weighing statue is standing strong in the harbor as the landmark of Constance.
It also contains the oldest water level measuring station in Baden-Württemberg.
But the most interesting thing is the level of indignation that it caused since it was created.
Open cleavage, lascivious posing and on her hands two tiny men (with obvious similarity to king and pope) – that was simply to much for one or the other church officials.
The creator of the landmark Peter Lenk said:
„… These figures are not the king and pope, but imposters that just made the worldly and spiritual insignia their own. And how far king and pope have been imposters – this I do not know and leave in the historical education of the beholder. …“– Peter Lenk (Labhards Bodensee Magazin 2013, S. 44–45)
Lake road & yacht harbor
But let us leave now the side left of the River Rhine and walk into the Seestrasse (Lake road), the promenade of the city including a small but nice yacht harbor.
Strolling directly along the Lake Constance on the one hand and on the other impressive villas – that is the sophisticated chic of the city!
In the opposite direction, westwards along the Rhine you enter the so called Spanierstrasse.
A street with inviting and cozy Cafes and restaurants directly at the river and a fantastic view to for example the Rhinetor tower.
Ferdinand Count Zeppelin – famous child of the city
So when you are sitting there and enjoying your summerish cold beer – suddenly a zeppelin can appear above your head.
The famous inventor of the eponymous airship was born here.
Many hotels, museums and other buildings around the Lake Constance are remembering this genius.
And a very special (but also not that cheap) pleasure is a flight over the Lake Constance with such a modern zeppelin.
It starts with 220,- EUR for 30 minutes and goes up to 120 minutes for around 800,- EUR.
But what you should keep in mind is the obviously unforgettable and unique sight.
Maybe we tell you in one of the upcoming posts more about such an experience. At least if you preorder online, you can save already 10,- EUR 🙂

The old town of Constance
South of Rhine you will find the old town, which is nearly completely retained since the Medieval times.
The uniqueness of the town planning from different centuries is visible here in the smallest spaces. Buildings from epoch of Romanesque (til around 1250), Gothic (around 1250-1550),
Renaissance (around 1550-1680), Baroque (around 1680-1790), Classicism (around 1790-1830) until the Neo Classicism (1830 – 1870) as well as the Historicism (1870-1914) can be gazed here in its origin form.
And also Shopping fans, not only from Switzerland will find here some kind of small paradise.
Countless stores do not leave a wish open and well placed restaurants, bars, street food and more will take care of your creature comforts.
Constance day trip
Constance has a lot more to offer, for example the Flower island Mainau in the north or the cathedral of Constance, to mention just two more which we would like to visit next spring and then tell you about all the color- and blossom richness .
For today the impressions from our day trip to Constance end here.
If you plan a tour through Germany like city hopping, you should have Constance definitely in mind, since it is too charming and interesting not to be visited.
Additional for all lovers of culture and history there is still the celebration of the “Council of Constance” happening, until 2018!
