May the Fires of Satan burn you alive – yes this time it was not only an expression.
The In Flammen Festival in Torgau, near Leipzig, in the heart of Germany was an event, that was not only called “In Flames”, with temperature around 38 degrees it really felt like being enflamed.
But of course no reason to complain – it is finally the long awaited Summer time and spending a Festival like this one with bad weather or even rain would have been quite a big fail so this is why we were happy about a loooong weekend, full of finest Metal music, finest Metal people and finest (Metal) beer! It was all about Metal, from Thursday, the 2nd of July till Saturday, the 4th we enjoyed an amazing Underground festival!
The organization of the event was as far as I can judge nearly perfect. No queues while waiting to get access to the area, all (!) Artists performed excellent, no further technical problems. Respect to the musicians that were performing in this heat.
This year was the 10th anniversary and yes, the organizer Thomas Richter had the honor to present a running order, which was worth for such an event!
Lets have a quick look at some names that were playing at In Flammen Festival:
Vader, Stallion, Dark Funeral, Omnium Gatherum, Entombed AD, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Bömbers and many many more…
In Flammen Festival
The whole List of the running order you find at the end of the Blog.
The great thing about “In Flammen Festival” is that you can enjoy a wide spectre of Metal Genres, from amazing traditional Heavy/Speed Metal like the amazing guys from Stallion (Germany) unto the most evil and raw Black metal Bands like Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult or the almigthy Dark Funeral from Sweden.
Find here a small example of Stallions smashing Burner “Killing time”, which is obviously not the best video quality but therefore pretty authentic and at least goddamn asskickin’ heavy metal at it’s finest!
So let’s go back once more into the chronological order – we arrived on Thursday noon with train from Berlin after approximately 2 hours ride and our Friend Sirko picked us up from the railway station.
We decided to buy the most important things (Beer and meat) from a nearby local store and then it was FLAMMEN-time!
Andreas, his girlfriend Sandra and the youngblood Konstantin were already there, installing our stay for the next days so we immediately built up the tent and afterwards rewarded ourselves with the first ice cold Beer.
There were two stages, the bigger, Main Stage where we so called “ landed” with our tent.
And a bit further away was located another stage, a smaller one for some of the either not yet so well known bands or the pure underground guys.
You could decide which show to enjoy. Due to the fact, that the day was at this point quite at its end, we decided to make a short visit to the nearby lake “Ententeich Torgau” to take a bath there.
It felt like a paradise after the hellish weather so far that day at In Flammen Festival!
How suitable, that on the way back, a cherry tree suddenly popped out on our way and asked if we want to enjoy his sweet fruits. Well, how to say no? Look here…
Later then, when Darkness fell over the unholy lands of Torgau we witnessed an amazing light- and fireshow of Weltenbrand.
Sirko and me decided to bring that day to an end while trying the must have drink at “In Flammen”, the so called Froschkotze, which means something like Frog vomit.
And yes, frog vomit is quite a good shit. Although i know the ingredients I will not tell them here 😉
This is still one good kept secret of black alchemy 🙂
The next day welcomed us of course with beams of fire from the sky, 30 degree already in the morning.
Bathing time again!
And afterwards we had to buy food and drinks again which was mandatory for surviving the festival in such weather conditions.
If there are two things that did not really work out that well on “In Flammen Festival” – it was the fact that there were two (!) showers approximately for two thousand men (or more, I don’t really know exactly) and one provider for breakfast, some local guys that sold a bread roll, some cheese stuff and some sausage plus water for 9 EUR!
Well, it was annoying, that some people obviously wanted to make some outrageous business on a total anti commercial event.
Anyway, face it and eat it. So it was already 1 PM, when the first bands entered the stage.
Our first Gig that day was Rectal Smegma, some Goregrind guys from Netherlands, that performed brutally, loud, fast and impressively dynamic!
Of course you have to like that kind of stuff, Goregrind is kind of special. I personally like it a lot, Birdie for example prefers Black Metal .
Good thing on Festivals, everyone gets his kind of taste.
Then Doomed (Germany) followed next and with their slow Riffs and epic songs, that take about from 6 to 9 minutes, follows up with some Gore-guys, that are playing totally different kind of Metal.
Anyway – Imagine a couple of 30 metalheads who completely outrage in a Moshpit right before the stage and after that a silent audience carefully listens to Doomed.
These opposites and variety of Metal, that’s what I love.
And all are united by the music, even though so full of contrasts.
Followed by Hell Militia from France and the already mentioned Stallion from Germany – both performed awesome.
Nominon, who play some fantastic Death Metal from Sweden and Eyehategod (Doom Metal from USA), who performed afterwards, but unfortunately I skipped that, but what I heard is, that they also performed great.
And then after the sun was already down, masses came together to see the legendary Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult from Germany with their charismatic Front female Onielar, who looked exactly like coming out directly from her grave with white facepaint, a long white dress, blood spilling from mouth and these totally mad looking eyes while she screams high pitched unholy oaths into the black of the night.
Then the time came for the almighty Vader from Poland. Harsh, asskicking Death Metal with a bombastic groove.
The masses went crazy, one big pure headbanging party, loud and strong. Even just the huge Tomasz “Hal” Halicki playing his Bass is just impressive to see.
He could have made a whole show just by standing there and playing. The Grand Finale of this day at In Flammen Festival was performed by the Motörhead Cover Band Bömbers, a Side-project from Abbath, the front man from Norwegian Black Metal Legends “Immortal”. Even more Motörheadish than the Original, they fired up a loud and god damn rock n roll gig that was legendary!
Lemmy Kilmister would have been proud if he’d have seen them, for sure!
That was the end of the day two and we are already coming to the end of the festival.
Saturday, even a bit hotter than the days before and of course again great names that couldn’t wait to shoot their metal bullets into the already hungry awaiting audience.
The day started with a 30 minute lasting Gig from the belgian Guys of Carnation and after this it was Coffee & Cake time for all!
Yes, The organizers offered Cake and Coffee for Artists, Crew and Audience.
At the legendary “In Flammen” Bar “Zur Froschkotze” the coffee & cake was served , which of course immediately melted in the burning afternoon sun, but it was a great thing, thanks to organizer Thomas & his team!
Even Metal guys need from time to time such classic food and cannot eat all the time raw meat and drink blood 😉
It was then time for Funeral Whore from Netherlands and Macbeth, some veterans from Erfurt, Germany who celebrate their 30th anniversary this year by playing solid classic Heavy Metal.
They started their career in the GDR, where they were known from 1987 to 1989 as Caiman, after Macbeth had been banned by the East German authorities following a police- and Stasi-monitored gig in Erfurt, Thuringia. Good old legendary stuff!
The next Band Iron Thor I had to skip, but then it was time for Maat from Germany, who played an excellent Death Metal with themes from the Ancient Egyptian Mythology.
Loud, refreshing and making hungry for the things that should come there later! Cliteater from Netherlands performed an extreme Goregrind.
All here is about the special part of a females body, that is even hidden in the Bands name.
The whole show was honoured by the audience with a heavy impressive Mosh pit.
If you have no idea what a Mosh pit is… imagine a bunch of guys that gather mainly in the front parts of the viewers block and then go completely wild. Something like this here…
Then, it was already nearly 8 PM it was time for the famous Attic from Germany.
Attic plays Heavy Metal in the old tradition of King Diamond with a very unique high pitched voice.
Same here – they made a fantastic show and with their black appearance it seemed they were even laughing at this merciless sun.
A hard heritage for Omnium Gatherum from Finland, which came next, but they delivered.
With their mix of Melodic Death Metal it was the perfect time to make all the Headbangers going wild. In my opinion they also have this typical traditional Finnish way of playing metal, which is usually melancholic, a bit with suffer, but full of deep energy.
It is a bit hard to describe but from nearly all Bands that come from the Land of the thousand Lakes.
Wintersun, Sentenced and many more. Maybe a bit similar to classic German thrash from the 80’s like Sodom, Kreator and Destruction and many more, which were playing quite typical for this German Thrash, we have it here with Omnium Gatherum for Finland.
Their Show was full of energy and the Frontman Jukka Pelkonen was jumping from one end of the stage to the other.
Then, Ladies and Gentlemen, the time has finally come for the long awaited Dark Funeral from Sweden.
Nowadays even very popular within the Black Metal scene they are one of the favourites of the Bird and yes, they were making an awesome Gig, full of Scandinavian Black Metal Hatred and quite hypnotizing.
The musicians of course are Pro’s and the drummer Dominator is such a machine on his instrument, I am sure he only was able to perform this superhuman performance with direct support from the Dark Lord himself.
The sound to be honest was a bit too high pitched in my opinion, the Guitars were screaming a bit too much, I would have loved to hear more Bass to give the whole Gig a bit more deep atmosphere and Mystery.
The Singer Heljarmadr was screaming his soul out of his body, if he didn’t already sold it already to the devil.
Also here – a bit more loudness to his voice would have made this Show perfect. All in all impressive, to the point and morbidly fascinating.
After Dark Funeral it was time for the leftover guys from Entombed, named Entombed AD entered the stage and also delivered a fantastic show mixed with their new material and also the evergreens from the in my opinion best Entombed Period around the Wolverine Blues in the Beginning / Mid of the Ninetees.
Loud and with full pressure they delivered finest Death‘n’Roll Entertainment and brought back the good old times…
In Flammen Festival 2015 was finally closed by the last Band of the evening Anaal Nathrakh from UK, who play kind of Industrial Black Metal.
Yes I have to leave you here without telling you about their Live gig, because I was already sleeping while standing and too tired to check out.
Yes yes, unprofessional in every way, but hey, I do it all for free 🙂
As I mentioned before, this whole Festival was very well organized, a lot of fun and was just a great time!
Many nice memories and new friends we took with us when we left on Sunday morning quite early and we are glad for having been there with fantastic people!
In Flammen Festival, thanks for a fantastic metal open air underground weekend!
