“♫ ♬ Daaa da, da da daaaa da da daaaa… ♫ ♬”
That’s right, dear reader. With the intro tune of the series “Game of Thrones” we introduce our current location.
Today we visit Braavos, the city of swordmasters and seafarers, as well as Kings Landing.
Both are locations of the world’s most popular and incredibly successful series Game of Thrones Girona.
Girona, the city in southeastern Spain, near the French border, has been the pilgrimage destination of many fans ever since the iconic presence of its cathedral and narrow streets in the legendary HBO series.
Game of Thrones Girona
One of the peculiarities of Girona as a Game Of Thrones location is that two locations from the series were shot here.
On the one hand, we have the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria, which towers high above the city from afar.
On the other hand, in the numerous narrow and medieval alleys of Girona scenes for the use or visualization of the free city of Braavos were turned off. So lets get started…
How do I get to King’s Landing, eh Girona?
For most visitors it is probably the best to reach Girona from Barcelona.
Either by car or even easier and faster by train. The almost 100 km distance between the two cities cost, for example just 9 EUR and take only 40 minutes. Best to book directly here at GoEuro.
Girona is connected to the high-speed line Madrid – Barcelona, which allows such times and prices.
Otherwise, the city in the northeast of Catalonia with its almost 100,000 inhabitants is also reachable via the international airport Girona. This is where the so-called budget airlines with destination Barcelona usually are landing. Kings landing, you remember?
Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing
Let’s start our “Game of Thrones in Girona” portrayal with the Great Sept.
The Catedral Santa Marìa de Gerona impresses with its sheer size and striking design. This church from the Gothic period makes its visitors feel truly small and appears more as a fortress than a sacred building. Last but not least, the 91 steps, which one must first take to reach the cathedral, contribute to this.
What strikes you when visiting the location is, that the original environment for the series has already been partially reworked and redesigned on the computer.
The masses of people watching the skirmish between Jaime Lannister and the High Sparrow at the foot of the stairs would not have a place there.
In addition to that scene, the cathedral had yet another legendary appearance, namely during its demolition by the intriguing Cersei Lannister, which thereby rid her true enemy with a big bang, the High Sparrow and his followers. This dramatic scene took place at the end of Season 6.
In real life, however, the cathedral enjoys, lets say, best health and continues to stand proudly and powerfully. In any case, we enjoyed our excursion to the cathedral very much, as it offers numerous great photo opportunities.
Braavos in Girona
The second major appearance of Game of Thrones Girona were numerous events taking place in Braavos.
Braavos, in the novel the free city of the sword masters and sailors captivates by its maritime-mediterranean-medieval appearance.
The main events here are those of the young Arya Stark, who delivers fierce persecution in the narrow, winding lanes of Girona with their adversaries.
Her main opponent here is the so-called homeless, who undergoes Arya a hard test in the name of the nameless Jaqen H’ghar (mmmmhh …). Especially the Carrer de Ferran el Catòlic, the Carrer de l’Escola Pia and the Carrer de la Claveria are the places of the treatise here.
Same for the Passeig Arqueologic, Sant Martí, L’Escola Pia and Sant Pere de Sant.
Generally, the places are within walking distance and quite easy to reach. Nevertheless, especially in the Spanish-Catalan midsummer, one or the other steep and narrow route may be a real challenge.
This has also been recognized by the tourism operators and therfore they offer special Segway tours.
You can reach all the locations comfortably and without your own muscle power on these tours. Great thing is that supernumeraries from the original series directly adjust some of the scenes in these places.
However, if you prefer something more traditional, you can also take a two-hour walk on foot.
You can book this for around 63 CHF ($63) here. An ice cream in the form of Jaime Lannister’s severed hand (yes you read it correctly) is inclusive.
This time, we decided on a discovery tour entirely on our own.
This gave us the freedom to discover all the places with all the opportunities and of course to shoot all our photos casually. But if we should re-visit Girona, we would certainly book one of the tours. Most likely the exciting Segway Tour.
In any case, we can recommend the visit to the cathedral, if you are staying a bit longer in Barcelona and have time for this day trip.
There is no need to be a hardcore Game Of Thrones fan, the cathedral with its gardens and alleyways is definitely worth a visit.
Next time we’ll get back to Portugal while having a whole travel series at the start. Some amazing impressions are waiting for you on our road trip from Lisbon to South Portugal! All the photo impressions from Games Of Thrones Girona can be found here in our gallery.
Yours, Hendrizio Lannister
