We just ended our road-trip in the West Coast of USA and after one week of just short relaxing in our Homebase Berlin we were already heading to another trip – this time the road led us more South to the Canary Islands and the journey starts with our Canary Islands cruise.
We had only about one week to “recover” from the previous vacation, and straight away we were heading to a new adventure. This time on a cruise ship called “AIDAcara“.
AIDAcara is actually the oldest of the ships of Aida Cruises, but that doesnt mean that you will find dust and spiderwebs in every corner. In fact the ship was in a good condition, yes maybe not that state of the art regarding design, entertainment and functionality like modern ships but still more than fine.
If you ever wondered what you can do on such a cruiseship, well here are some of the things that are waiting for you there:
- Aromatic sauna
- Calypso Restaurant
- AIDA Shop
- Steam sauna
- Market restaurant
- Finnish Sauna
- Selection Restaurant
- Calm Oasis
- Jogging parcours
- Anytime Bar (Disco)
- Volleyball/- Basketball field
- Kids Club
- Cara Lounge
- Power Plate
We are already quite experienced with Cruises, so far most often with TUI Cruises which is our all time favourite so far.
A perfect trip is truly to discover the Mediterranean Sea or South of Europe because you have so many quite diverse places and everyday some new excitement.

But back to topic:
We arrived all together – this time it was a family vacation together with Hendrik’s parents – to the capital of Gran Canaria on 8th July 2016 – Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and first thing we did, we checked into our hotel, Hotel Santa Catalina.
It is a beautiful, classy hotel that has certainly had wonderful times during its service of lovely tourists on this beautiful island.
This 5 Star Hotel, which is obviously still one of the best at all of Gran Canaria is not located straight away in the center, and walking would take around 15-20 minutes to the main shopping street called Calle Triana.
So the first evening after a long day (we got up in the middle of the night due to our flights) we had a relaxing walk along the harbor and the beach.
Canary Islands cruise: Quick facts
>All of the Canary Islands are volcanic, the most recent eruption was on Pico el Teide, in Tenerife on 1909.
What mostly fascinates, is that all of these islands differ so much from each other; with size, landscape and nature.
The climate can be very dry on one island when on the other it is very wet. This is due to the micro-climate that is ranging on the Canary Islands.
Lets start our Canary Islands cruise with the main Island which we discovered the first and last – Gran Canaria.
Gran Canaria is third largest islands of Canary Island archipelago.
Gran Canaria is the southernmost spot of Europe and at the same time its capital Las Palmas is the southernmost capital of Europe.
The landscape of Gran Canaria varies so much, that in the South you can enjoy dry beaches, beautiful dunes and rocks can be found. In the North, the climate is more wet, which also can be seen in the woods and vegetation.
Our stay was in the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. We decided to stick with the city center, harbor and shopping mall. Due to the lack of time, since we had only couple of days in total in this wonderful spot, we decided to have a walk along the harbor, center and the beach.
Just to mention this in our Canary Islands Blog: Vegueta is a historic part of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Beautiful and full of antique charm. Go and see!
The tourist – and gathering spot of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Place for shopping and nice cafeterias.
I must mention that shopping is very cheap in Gran Canaria.
For normal European Standards and especially during the Sales – period you can find quite good deals.
Nevertheless, for higher class shopping this would not be the place to be, but if quality is not playing the key-role, then this could be something.
Parks of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria offers a variety of nature parks and also city parks. Due to lack of time we did not explore the beautiful nature parks, but we saw couple of city parks and they were lovely.
In our Canary Islands Blog we want to mention the three most famous parks, but do not underestimate smaller, less known parks – Might be a worth to visit!
- Parque Romano
- Parque de las Rehoyas
- Parque Santa Catalina
Our ship was located on a Las Palmas Port. Close to the city park and also a nice shopping mall where we spent quite a while.
From the port to the city beach takes around 25-35 minute walk. Once we got into our cabines, we did not want to leave too far away from the ship and stayed in the neighbourhood.
The next morning was the departure to the next stop Madeira, isolated island where life goes its own way…
Our Canary Islands Blog just got started.
See you very soon on our next stop in the beautiful Madeira…
