“Grüezi miteinand’ ” and hello from our new adoptive country Switzerland and our Ascona holidays!
After our pretty travelish summer with the Roadtrip to the US West coast and the cruise to the Canary Islands we decided to explore our new home country Switzerland more intensively during the last summer weeks.
It was kind of hard to make a decision about the destination due to the fact that Switzerland from my perspective has one of the most fascinating and beautiful landscapes in the world.
What was clear so far:
- Rental car
- summer weather
- Airbnb accommodation
- and Holiday mood
After some considerations we decided to visit Lago Maggiore in the very south of Switzerland.
More concrete Ascona & Locarno, as well as the 30 miles east wards located Lugano at the Lago di Lugano.
The weather for our scheduled trip in mid of August was perfectly summer like, with a lot of sun and temperatures of 82°F.
Off to South Switzerland
So our first trip through Switzerland started!
We went from St. Gallen, wich is located in the north of Switzerland near the Bodensee in the trijunction Germany – Austria – Switzerland to Ascona, 155 miles southwards.
St. Gallen is in Suisse average pretty low located, but already after a ride of 30 to 40 minutes you are in the mountains of the pre-Alps.
So what is making the Suisse landscape so special?
To my taste it is an incomparable picturesque beauty of these mountain regions, crystal clear turquoise mountain lakes, fresh green meadows that look like new-mown all the time, deep green firs, water falls and populated valleys with adorable houses, churches, half-timbered buildings. And all in such harmony united and cultivated lovely by men, where it makes sense and only where it is needed.
Birdie and me still had the impressions in mind from the majestic mountains of Yosemite in the USA. But this here, the showy natural beauty was something different.
“Look at me, how dandified I can look like” is what mother nature seems to rejoice from every corner.
Switzerland charmed us right from the very first moment.
The picturesque Andeer
We made our first bigger stop in Andeer, around 85 miles away from St. Gallen.
An indescribable beautiful and picturesque little village. Located in the canton Graubünden and embedded in a valley between the mountain range this place has not even 1,000 citizen.
The most touristic place here is the Aquandeer, a famous spa.
Lets have a look at some photo impressions from this place.
The lake Sufner
Not even 6 miles further the next beauty of nature was awaiting us, the Sufnersee, Lake Sufner.
A reservoir Mountain lake, clear turquoise colored right in the middle of this mountain panorama scene. Embedded between the Pötter– and the Dorfforest.
We also want here the photos take actions and give an impression.
Ascona holidays – jewel of South Switzerland
So without any bigger breaks we went straight to the now 62 miles distance located Ascona.
After checking in our airbnb accommodation we felt immediately the Mediterranean flair all around.
Palms and summertime made us feel like in a Mini-Nearly-Italy-Vacation.
After a short refreshing we went directly to the legendary promenade along the Piazza Giuseppe Motta.
What a sight! A place with paradise origin, full of charm.
This place is the lowest location in Switzerland, only 196 meters above sea level.
Already from the distance it is greeting its visitors with the church San Pietro e Paolo and its high belfry, built in the 16th century.
But what fascinated me the most was this perfect mix of Italian flair including perfect summer weather in combination with the Suisse discipline and order.
A location to fully give in to Dolce Vita.
You fell the Unbearable Lightness of Being from the first moment. And by the view onto the lake Lago Maggiore you are just filled with peace and bliss.
Ascona itself is a pretty small place with around 5,500 citizen.
One of the summertime highlights is incidentally the JazzAscona.
This biggest Hot Jazz festival Europe wide is taking place during June and July. World famous artists are performing here at the dreamlike riverside of Ascona.
We spent our august-hours with comfy strolling along the waterside and to take a closer look to the one or other alley.
A tasty ice cream here, a small snack there – What a life!
Afterwards we went on to discover the directly neighbouring Locarno.
The Locarno Film Festival
It might be quite pointless to argue if Locarno or Ascona is more charming.
Both places are s adorable and so similar, that from our awareness it was like one beautiful place.
We reached Locarno in the early evening hours and the small picturesque city was already pulsating everywhere.
Similar to Ascona the promenade with its view to the lake and the boats is inviting to dangle easygoing.
Exactly what we did.
Small booths with many origin local specialties were inviting to stay.
Cafés, palms, cozy street lights and bedizened people, wherever you look to.
What made Locarno at this time even more attractive was the Locarno Film Festival.
In the center of this beautiful old town at the Piazza Grande were shown on a huge canvas the best of the best auteur movies for more than 160,000 visitors and 3,000 industry figures.
Meanwhile Locarno plays in its 69 years old history a prominent role in the world of Film Festivals.
German-Italian friendship in South Switzerland
Well, our destination today was not the Film Festival, but the general discovering of the warmest city of Switzerland.
The visitor awaits a very neat, clean, peaceful and surely not that poor city.
Palms, lemon trees, colorful flowers. Tiny alleys, authentic buildings and everywhere people speak Italian.
But because Locarno is located in Switzerland, people also speak German.
One of the special charms of Switzerland is for me the multilingualism.
The rest of the evening we spent with cozy walks through Locarno, enjoying every single moment.
The true highlight of the city and also most famous pilgrimage destination of Switzerland is the Sanctuary Madonna del Sasso in Orselina.
Located a bit higher than the city, the founding of this church is based on a theophany of the Franciscan Bartolomeo in the year 1480.
For us the day was already more than fulfilled. We collected countless beautiful impressions on our first Switzerland trip and could end this day blissful and satisfied.
Already the next day we wanted to explore the already mentioned Lugano.
But this we will be our next post, stay travellish!
Ade un Uf Widerluaga!
